Reviews for auto repair shops: winning trust before the first call

By the ReviewDeck team ·

Short answer: Ask every customer for a Google review when they collect the car, with a code at the counter and a text the same day. Answer complaints about price by pointing to the written estimate, and take disputes about the repair itself to the phone.

Nobody wants to visit a repair shop, and most people fear being overcharged. Reviews are how a stranger decides you can be trusted with their car.

When to ask

The best moment is pickup, when the car runs and the bill matched the estimate.

  • At the counter. A QR code by the card machine.
  • By text the same day. “Thanks for coming in. If you have a minute, a review helps: [link].”
  • On the invoice. A printed line and a code.

Ask every customer, and offer nothing in return: no discount on the next oil change.

What a good review says for you

Reviews that mention specifics do the most work: “explained what was wrong”, “showed me the old part”, “the price matched the quote”. You cannot script a review, but you can earn those lines:

  • Give a written estimate before starting.
  • Call before doing anything that was not on it.
  • Show the worn part.

The two complaints every shop gets

“They overcharged me.”

Thank you for the feedback, James. I am sorry the cost was more than you expected. We give a written estimate before any work starts and call before adding to it. I would like to go through yours with you. Please call me on 555-0100. — Dan, owner

“The problem came back.”

I am sorry the issue returned. That is not the result we want. Please bring the car back in so we can look at it again, and ask for me.

Do not argue the technical details in public. Readers cannot judge who is right about a wheel bearing; they can judge who was reasonable.

Reviews you can report

  • A person with no record in your system.
  • A competitor or a former employee.
  • A review about a different shop with a similar name.
  • A threat to post a bad review unless the bill is reduced. Keep the message.

Beyond Google

  • Yelp. Do not ask for reviews there. Keep the page accurate and reply.
  • BBB. Answer every complaint before the deadline; an unanswered one hurts your rating.
  • Carfax and similar service listings. Claim them if they exist for your shop.

A routine

  • Daily: reply to new reviews.
  • At every pickup: ask.
  • Monthly: check your rating and review count next to the shops nearby.
